Serious and moving stories alternate with humorous observations, for example about the cats in the author’s family home, where one of the many cats was employed as a dog because the posts for cats were already filled. A moving story tells of the aging dog Schumrich, who longs for a companion and finds in the tomcat Müfchen a kindred friend and companion for his final years. Another story with an autobiographical background documents the life of Schnürrchen the tomcat, who could not understand why his owner, who had been arrested by the Stasi and remained interned for 1,000 days, did not return; Schnürrchen, devastated by the sudden loss of his friend, refused to eat and died! But dogs are also featured in the stories, such as the Afghan hound Banshi, who is flown in from distant Abkhazia to Wernigerode and later makes a name for himself as an egg thief… A faithful donkey in Malta, a starving horse abandoned by its owner, and so on. And then there’s the story of the stubborn sheep in Andalusia. Delightful!
